“Based on the operational situation that has developed around Avdiivka, in order to avoid an encirclement and to protect the lives and health of soldiers, I decided to withdraw our units from the city and go to the defense on the most favorable route,” said Sirsky.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyi spoke about the situation in Avdiivka in his speech on the evening of February 15.

On the night of February 16, Brigadier General Oleksandr Tarnovsky, commander of the “Davria” operational-strategic troop group, said that maneuvers were being carried out in Avdiivka and that the situation was “difficult, but under control.”

On the same day, he reported that the Ukrainian army withdrew from the “Zenith” position in the southeastern suburbs of Avdiyivka. Later, Tarnovsky wrote, according to the order received, the Ukrainian army had already left Avdiivka to pre-prepared positions.

“According to the order received, we left Avdiyivka to positions prepared in advance. In a situation where the enemy was advancing ten to one with bombs on the corpses of their own soldiers, in a continuous bombardment, this was the only one. Correct decision, encirclement was not allowed, personnel were withdrawn, and our soldiers took up the defense of the appointed boundaries, ” Tarnowski said.

Later, the official report of the commander of the third separate assault brigade, which performed special tasks in Avdivka, also appeared. Now its fighters have left the city along with other Ukrainian factions. Stormtroopers move to readiness positions outside Avdiivka. Andrii Biletskyi, commander of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, said this.

According to him, Ukrainian fighters did everything. He thanked every soldier for his determination.

“We are retreating to prepared positions to deliver another strong blow. Thanks to the command for a smooth finish. The battle continues.”

The balance of forces of the Russian Federation and Ukraine at Avdiivka

On February 15 the ratio of forces in the Avdiivka area was seven to one in favor of the Russians. The Russian Federation has concentrated the GRU's elite military units and specialists in this area. Viktor Pliak of the 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade wrote on social networks before the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Avdiivka, “everything has reached a critical stage” and told his truth about the last days of Avdiivka's defense.

Reinforcement of the Avtiv garrison, one of the most experienced Ukrainian regiments – the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade – did not help hold the city. Its militants released a video of themselves entering the city in vehicles. Even Bagmuth's supporters could not imagine such a thing.

Across the sea, Avdiivka's situation was also closely monitored. One of the main problems of the armed forces is the shortage of ammunition, which both militants and experts have been constantly clamoring for.

Only the aid of the Allies, especially the United States, could satisfy the “shell famine.” Washington, due to internal political games, could not agree on the allocation of the promised $60 billion to Ukraine. Without this money, the Pentagon cannot send a single cartridge to Ukraine, and the plan continues to be blocked in Congress. The White House understands that Avdivka's predicament is partly their fault.

What Sirsky promised

Addressing the Munich Security Conference, President Volodymyr Zelensky said the military command's decision to withdraw from Avdiivka was correct. He emphasized that it is impossible to talk about the losses of the security forces of Ukraine. However, Avdivka had “one to seven”. “There are seven Russians for one Ukrainian,” Zelensky said.

Commander-in-Chief Chirsky said, “Ukrainian soldiers performed their military duty with dignity, did everything possible to destroy the best Russian military units, inflicted significant losses on the enemy in terms of manpower and equipment.” Most importantly, he promised that Avdiyvka would return to Ukraine.

“We are taking steps to stabilize the situation and maintain the occupied positions. The lives of soldiers are of the highest value. We will still return Avdivka,” the armed forces chief said.
