The Czech Republic’s first solar shelter protects cars and charges them from sunlight

“One hundred and eight double-sided panels represent a total installed power of 39.96 kWp, which is expected to produce around 20 MWh of electricity per year. We will use it for internal charging or recharging the electric lizards in a nearby warehouse,” explained company director Tomasz Žilek at the launch, a high-speed connected to two charging points. The station will then allow electric vehicles to be charged. He estimated the annual savings at up to 250,000 crowns.

The pilot operation will now test and evaluate the equipment based on the overall system performance, monitoring and remote control. “If it works as well as we expect, we’re open to offering it to other companies or city districts,” Zilek said.

The company describes the new product as a full-scale photovoltaic power plant with an output of nearly 40 kWp, the first of its kind in the Czech Republic. With the ability to accumulate energy directly at the charging station, the shelter responds to the growing problem of excess energy during sunny days and hours.

There are two charging points at the high-speed station.

Most of the solar energy produced is consumed directly on site. In the future, the city agency wants to build them, for example, in city district offices, government institutions and everywhere where it is not possible to ensure fast charging of cars in addition to the distribution network and utility, where solar energy is difficult in short-term parking lots.

According to Minister for Science, Research and Innovation Marek Ženíšek (TOP 09), this is a solution that protects vehicles, produces clean energy and solves storage for charging electric cars. We need such projects to modernize infrastructure and reduce carbon footprint in cities, he said.

The carport is equipped with bifacial technology, which means high-efficiency double-sided solar panels use reflected and diffused light to produce energy. To further enhance the effect, the area, which can accommodate twelve cars, is under a shelter and covered with white ducks.
