The painful and poignant theme of the war in Ukraine is also reflected in the program of the ongoing One World festival. The Eastern Front documentary was directed by Vitaly Mansky and Yevhen Dytarenko, who also worked as army medics and filmed directly in the trenches. But not only there.

The creator of the documentary is Yevhen Dytarenko. He tries to show the war as it is through the film. “My role is to show what war looks like from inside the battle line so that everyone can see it with their own eyes. It will remove many unnecessary questions and bring the discussion to a new level.” | Source: Hypermarket Movie

“I first came to war as a documentary filmmaker in 2014. I came here as a tourist and I thought I would film something in two weeks. But that kind of strategy only works if you come abroad as a documentary filmmaker. For your country, that approach doesn’t work. My role also has something else. , I realized that I had to do something. I realized that nobody needed a camera man. I still had to answer questions about what I was filming, when it would be shown, and so on. I was tired of answering them.” He says One of the creators is Jevan Dytarenko of Eastern Front Documentary.

Didarenko already found his “other role” nine years ago. Not in the movie, but directly in the reality of the battles for the Donetsk airport.

I got to know the hospitalieri medical battalion that took me to evacuate the wounded from Donetsk airport. I helped them and it occurred to me what I could do. Tytarenko served in this battalion in 2014 and 2015. In addition to filming, he also worked as a doctor.

“When the big Russian invasion started last year, I immediately knew what to do and where to go. From day one, I filmed – for example, to document Russian war crimes. It was like reading the same book or writing the same story a second time. You’re already in the game. Know the rules and understand how it works.”

Jevhen Dytarenko brings a new dimension to film documentary as a cameraman and a participant in the martial arts at the same time. Interested parties refer to the words of the famous Hungarian photographer.

“For example, Robert Gabba, if you don’t get good shots, it means you’re not close to the subject. Many people imagine, idealize, or romanticize the subject of war. They’re based on simplified books, movies, or TV news.’

“But reality is very different from fiction. My role is to show everyone what it looks like from inside the battle lines for everyone to see with their own eyes. It removes many unnecessary questions and brings the debate to a new level.”

Trying to convey reality

In the film Eastern Front by Yevhen Titarenko and Vitaly Manský, the viewer witnesses both the after-life joys of retired soldiers and the most brutal war situations. Tytarenko does not deliberately avoid such scenes.

“Everyone is based on personal experience in their opinions. The world media tries to give information to its audience in a gentle way, so as not to hurt them and harm their souls. To continue as weak psychic beings. But it has nothing to do with real life,” he says.

“There are people living next to us who live in their information vacuum and fantasy. They go to the polls and somehow decide based on their own experience. But if they rely on some kind of fantasy where do they get real experiences? How do they get clear vision?’

We need to open these wide closed eyes, adds Jevhen Titarenko. “No one knows for sure whether Ukraine should get planes and heavy equipment or not. They are trying to decide what to do. But this is not a war between Russia and Ukraine. This is Russia’s war against the entire civilized world.’

Pacifism like lack of experience

“But if a neighbor breaks into your house, kills your relatives, robs you, rapes your children, kidnaps a woman and takes several rooms, how do you want to resolve it democratically and peacefully? How are you going to talk to him normally? Such calmness is naive and childish. I repeat that everything comes from experience.

According to Tytarenko, people will think differently if they know the reality of war. “On 24. February, the first year of the beginning of the Russian invasion, I was in Berlin. A day later, there was a march of several thousand pacifists, who chanted against the war and in favor of a negotiated and democratic solution,” the creator recalled.

Yevhen Titarenko and Vitaly Mansky offer such an experience to audiences around the world. Even Czech at the One World Festival. They will come in person.
